Updated: Nov 3, 2019

Trees tower overhead, their tops indistinguishable from the rest of the sky. Beams of sunlight break through the canopy, lighting up the lush green carpet of the forest floor.

Only 110,000 acres, five percent of the original old-growth redwood forest, is left today: Founders Grove, located along Avenue of the Giants in the heart of Humboldt Redwoods State Park, is one of the few remaining places in the entire world you can still walk among these giants.

One notable aspect of the grove is Founders Tree, which at 346 feet tall, is one of the tallest trees in the entire park.

Founders Grove is also home to the Dyerville Tree. Once considered to be the tallest tree in the park, this 362-foot- tall giant is believed to have been over 2,000 years old when it fell during a Pacific storm in 1991.

Redwoods decompose incredibly slowly, so a large tree like Dyerville may remain a part of this forest for centuries to come

Fun Fact: the Dyerville Giant fell with so much force that the impact registered on a nearby seismograph

Now get out there and have fun!
