What To Expect
Trinidad Head Trail loops around a rocky ocean promontory, offering 360-degree views of the Pacific Ocean, nearby sea stacks, the local wharf and harbor, the historic small town of Trinidad, and up the northern Humboldt coast towards Redwood National Park.
This hike is really more of a scenic walk: there are numerous short spur trails through "tunnels" of windswept foliage that take you along the edge of Trinidad Head to wooden benches overlooking expansive scenic vistas. Trinidad Head may be short distance-wise, but it's a great spot to bring some binoculars and take the time to really enjoy the views.
In addition to the wildflowers and seabirds that are common among prime Northern California beaches, the base of Trinidad Head and many nearby sea stacks are full of sea lions. Best of all, whales like to frequent the area so you'll have a good chance of seeing a massive tail splash or two if you keep an eye out.
Things To Know
The trail is much narrower along the spurs, so don't forget to watch out for poison oak!
Finally, the free parking area for Trinidad Head is the same as for Trinidad State Beach. A short paved incline will take you from the parking lot to the trailhead, where you will have the option of starting on the steeper gravel section of the trail or beginning with the wooded dirt part of the loop first.
