What To Expect

The trail to Red Rock Canyon climbs gently through native chaparral plant communities and oak woodland, ultimately leading you to a small canyon of smooth red rocks, reminiscent of the backdrop for an old Western.

Much of the hike has very minimal to no shade, so make sure to bring sunscreen, a hat, and lots of water!

This canyon always smells great thanks to the numerous sage species that grow here.

The trail to Red Rock Canyon is understandably one of the most popular in Orange County's Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park. If you go just before sunset, you'll be treated to a great photo opportunity as the the setting sun hits the sandstone walls of the canyon, lighting it up a darker, more vibrant red. If you prefer to hike in the morning, I recommend going as early as possible, as this hike can get pretty crowded.

A beautiful stand of California Coast Live Oak.

Getting There

You can find the Red Rock Canyon hike parking lot using this address: 26701 Portola Pkwy, Foothill Ranch, CA 92610. The trailhead is clearly marked and the hike begins just past the far end of the parking lot. Parking is three dollars at the kiosk (don't forget to put your receipt on your dashboard). Or, don't quote me on this, but you can park for free across the street at the Foothill Ranch Towne Center.

Now get out there and have fun!
